Dr. Cheryl Woodson

To Survive Caregiving

Women care for parents, grandparents, in-laws and other older adults, children and grandchildren while we build our businesses, try to stay married and plan for a healthy retirement. No wonder we’re tired!

Dr. Woodson shares insights from her experience as businesswoman, a geriatrics expert and family caregiver in her book TO SURVIVE CAREGIVING. The presentation will help women put ourselves higher on the “ToDo” list as we give great care and retain enough energy to live our dreams without sacrificing our physical, financial, emotional and spiritual health.

Like other women, Dr. Cheryl Woodson juggles several roles. She is a wife, the mother of two teenagers, a health care provider, a businesswoman, an educator, an author and has a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo. She also had the role of family caregiver for her mother's ten year journey with Alzheimer's.

Dr. Woodson earned her undergraduate degree at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, was followed by a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at UCLA which led to a career in academic medicine. Dr. Woodson directed the geriatric medicine fellowship program at The University of Chicago/ Oak Forest Hospital. To bring geriatrics to an earlier stage of medical training, she moved to the Buehler Center on Aging, Northwestern University Medical School where she supervised training for residents and medical students. She also guided ¼ of the Northwestern medical school class in a 2-year study of dementia, community health and how to make careers in medicine compatible with life.

Because of her outspoken advocacy for older adults and their caregivers, Congressman Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., appointed her to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging and Mr. Charles Johnson, Director of the Illinois Department on Aging, appointed her to the Illinois Older Adult Services Advisory Committee. Her commitment to effective patient-doctor communication and health literacy has resulted in a training video about health literacy produced by the American Medical Association and a profile in the 2008 Aetna African-American History Calendar for Health Literacy.

In 1996, Dr. Woodson developed an interdisciplinary assessment program for frail older adults. In 2001, she broadened this service into an adult wellness center known as the Woodson Center to serve older adults, people who take care of older adults and people who want to live to BE older adults by aging excellently!

After publishing academic articles and textbook chapters, Dr. Woodson now writes for a broader audience. TO SURVIVE CAREGIVING: A Daughter's Experience, A Doctor's Advice on Finding, Hope, Help and Health (INFINITY Publishing 2007,) is a practical resource to help families give great care while protecting their physical, financial, emotional and spiritual health
